abstract compositions

this graphic design assignment asked students to create 5 abstract compositions using only black and white. we were asked to draw inspiration from a piece of art or design work that we researched earlier in the semester. i was inspired by Sol LeWitt’s famous “wall drawings.” to channel this conceptual, collaboritave energy, i created a set of black shapes from construction paper. i asked my four roommates to arrange this set of shapes on a 10x10in white square, and gave them five minutes to do so. they had no context about the project or information about what the arrangements would be used for. after scanning all these compositions, i used selective cropping, copy and pasting, and layering to create my final five compositions.
